The Margibi Women Alliance for Peace and Development (MARWAPD) has hosted several key activities in Kakaka Margibi County meant to promote peace and development, empower women and take the organization forward.
The events lasted from Friday April 25, to Sunday April 27, 2025 bringing together prominent people from the United States of America like Dr Demenia Gbarpea and her inlaw, Mrs. Magaret Korkpor, a former worker of United Nations, the Margibi County Legislative Caucus and the county administration, Liberian Politicians, business people, women from various districts of Margibi and many other individuals at the Kakaka Administrative Building, the Kakaka Philadelphia Church and the MARWAPD Office in Bassa Community.
The activities included launching of the group, hosting of the women convention which was centered on peace building, street parade and launching of the group, induction and rally as well as the official opening of the organization’s office.
The individuals behind the formation of MARWAPD are former representative candidates of the 2023 elections who lost the contest headed by Madam Alice Tonia Baysah of Margibi County District Number Five who is the dream bearer of the group.
Others are Madam Florence Nepay of Margibi District Four, Madam Dorothy Barcolleh of Margibi District Three and several other women who are also politicians. Not all of the members of the group, especially the officials contested in the 2023 elections but most of them played major political roles anyway.
MARWAPD, according to the leadership is a nonpolitical institution recognized by the Government of Liberia with the focus of promoting peace, unity and development amongst women and Liberians in general.
Madam Alice Baysah

Speaking to reporters on Friday April 25, 2025, Madam Baysah explained that the organization is mainly focused on strengthening women, making impacts in their lives in the areas of training, agriculture and whatever necessary for their voices to be heard in the society.
On the overall, she said building and promoting peace will lead their involvements and other things they want to do will follow.
She spoke that the convention was focused on teaching women about their rights, roles and responsibilities in the society and knowing how to build peace.
She indicated that at times some women are taken advantage of by the men because they don’t know their rights. The women alliance leader noted that skill training and adult literacy will be provided for someone of the women.
She stated that the dream of the organization came about when she decided to empower women after losing the election, adding that she can not only impact women by winning elections.
According to her, even though she and others in the group took part in politics, it is actually about how best they can do things for the women without politics.
In her view, the others who also took part in politics were already doing some meaningful things in their districts before contesting like the Dorothy Barcolleh and Florence Nepay.

During the thanksgiving service on Sunday at the Philadelphia Church, another official of the group, Madam Dorothy Barcolleh told the congregation that the Margibi Women Alliance for Peace and Development or MARWAPD is a non-profit and non-political organization.

“The Margibi Women Alliance for Peace and Development is a non-profit and non-political organization. At the face of the organization, you may see some of the faces of 2023 politicians, no, it is not a political institution.”
After the 2023 elections, in December of the same year, Madam Alice Tonia Baysah met with them from the various districts of Margibi and told them that they don’t need to be representatives before working for the people of Margibi, she continued. Following that, they started to bring other women on board.
The Keynote speaker of the convention and a supporter to MARWAPD, Dr. Demenia Gbarpea encouraged the women to do everything possible to succeed and make impacts in the society no matter their backgrounds.

While in an interview with reporters she stated also: “No matter where you come from or you have, once you set your mind and your goal, you can work towards it, determination and perseverance, therefore; you don’t have to be born from a rich family but you can make it once you are focused.”
She called on the women to focus on solution instead of problems, saying: “Instead of you saying I don’t have, how can I get? That’s where I’m coming from.”
One of the things she has observed about Liberian Women according to her is they are problem focused so they need to switch from problem focused to problem solving.
She urged the women to be a support and empowerment to one another if they will succeed, mainly the leadership.
Dr. Gbarpea who is a daughter of Sannoyea and a board member of the United Bong County Association of the America, an association in which she has and continue to serve key positions added that the women should not allow politics or anything else bring division amongst them.
She made a contribution of US$1,000 to the group and promised to ensure that an internet system is installed in their office with her taking the responsibility for year to recharge.
