The Stipendiary Magistrate of the Kakaka Magisterial Court Cllr. Julius S. Browne is seriously warning Margibians and Liberians to stop taking the law into their own hands, as doing so undermines the rule of law in the country.
Cllr. Browne, a former Attorney at law who was elevated at the level of the Supreme Court of Liberia says the best remedy to keeping Liberia safe and peaceful, strengthening the rule of law and living in harmony is to seek justice through the legal proceedings of Liberia, especially in the court system.
His elevation was earlier noted by the Chief Justice of Liberia, Sie-A-Nyene G Yuoh during the opening of the May Term of the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Kakaka, Margibi County.
After practicing for about five years, an application is done to sit the legal test of the Supreme Court, upon passage, an attorney at law is then promoted to the rank of a counselor at law.
While speaking to our reporter recently, he also said, “It is important that we speak to our people on the essence of following the rule of law. Of recent, we have seen a lot of mob violence, people taking the law in their hands and at times, these things lead to chaos.”
According to him, there is a court system in the country so people must take the courage to prioritize the system with the rationale of maintaining the peace as the court is a place of redress.
He stated that everyone has rights in the court inclusive of the defendant and complainant but some people just take matters to court and abandon the case because they probably only had the intention to ensure that another person is landed behind bars.
When such things are done, according to him, the law must take its rightful course to see into it that another person’s right is not violated so some of the people are released with the understanding that the court will take them back into custody whenever the court is ready.
He averred also that when the statutory period of the court elapses and the state is not also moving the court for prosecution, the defendant has the right to be released until the court is ready.
When these things are done, he narrated that there are people who misinterpret it as allowing people to walk with impunity from the court after committing crimes and as a result of this, some of them take the law into their hands by attacking or carrying on mob violence against others.
He said some of the people know that the law is the rightful remedy but they still choose to take the law into their hands.
Magistrate Browne maintained that the law is the law and must be respected and followed because taking the law into our hands is just as much as fight the process of justice in Liberia.
