One of the key players who started the struggle to have the former Speaker Jonathan Fonati Kofa out of the position, who is also Margibi County District #: 5 Representative, Clarence Gleekan Gahr says he does not regret the day he took the stance to remove former Speaker Kofa from the position because according to him, the ex-speaker messed up the country.
Representative Gahr who is the House’s Committee Chair on Public Account and Expenditure and also serves as the chairman of the joint Public Account Committee of the National Legislature boasted about having records in his possession to prove his allegations against the Grand County Lawmaker, Jonathan Fonati Kofa.
According him, the position he serves in the House of Representatives enables him to see a lot of things that many other lawmakers don’t see. He spoke in Perkins Farm along the Borlorla Road in District #: 5, Margibi County on June 4, 2025.
He noted, “Some people came and said we were fighting because of our own selfish gains, that’s lie! There are records that I have, I challenge anybody I don’t regret the day I took the stance to remove the former speaker because there are records that I get he messed this country up. I don’t regret it. My position I served in, there are things I see that plenty people can’t see.”
The lawmaker who played a major role in making sure that the former speaker rose to the position after serving as a deputy speaker was later seen at the initial stage presiding over the gathering and sessions of the majority of the lawmakers who opposed the former speaker’s leadership then.
He stated that they are done with the leadership crisis at House, it is now time to work in his district.
It can be recalled that a group of lawmakers in their majority under the banner of the ‘Majority Bloc’ listed some counts against Cllr Jonathan Fonati Kofa through a notarized resolution in 2024 including the unilateral establishment of extra committees in the House of Representatives without the consensus of a two-third majority, the unlawful sending of lawmakers’ names to represent the National Legislature at ECOWAS, overspending above his approved budget as a deputy speaker during two budget years and other counts.
Following that, they started holding sessions under the gavel of Rep Clarence G. Gahr who presided and demanded the presence of the deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah. When Fallah did not turn up for the first time he was expected, he was again demanded with an ultimatum threatening to declare his seat vacant.
Fallah, out of fear of losing his position succumbed and joined the ‘Majority Bloc’ of lawmakers while at the same time Kofa too requested his immediate presence under his authority. At the point, the House hosted two sessions, the Kofa or ‘Minority Bloc’s session and the one held by the ‘Majority Bloc’.
A new election was conducted by the majority declaring Koon a white ballot speaker but Kofa ran to the Supreme Court of Liberia which declared both the actions of the minority and majority as unconstitutional.
After the Supreme Court’s first ruling in their dispute, the lawmakers still went ahead and continue conducting their sessions. Along the way, the joint chambers of the House was burnt down making them to continue their business as at another location (the executive pavilion).
The Supreme Court made a second decision and declared Kofa victorious over them. He resigned his position after a series of discussions and engagements. Richard Nagbe Koon too resigned and contested for the speakership for the second time in some months, he won the elections.
Just following the recent power struggles in the House of Representatives, Representative Clarence G. Gahr who played a major role that led to the former Speaker Jonathan Fonati Kofa finally resigning the position, says he has no regret in his decision to remove the former from office.
