A prominent member of Mr. Alexander Benedict Cummings’ Alternative National Congress or ANC, Dr. Mohammed Sheriff Esq has seriously attributed the declination in the party’s support to bad decisions having the basis of wrong pieces of advice.
He particularly pointed out that the current national chairman of the party who has also for several years acted in the position, Atty Lafayette E. O. Gould ill-advises the political leader of the party, Mr. Alexander B. Cummings.
This, he said is responsible for the tremendous reduction in the party’s 2017 seven percent (7%) which drastically dropped to one percent (1%) during the 2023 general elections.
He made the statement when he referred to Atty Gould while addressing his fellow partizans during a debate at the ANC’s 4th National Convention held in Kakaka over the weekend (Saturday October 4, 2025). The convention itself witnessed poor attendance as majority of the partizans and special invitees did not show up.
The debate was part of the processes of the election around the party’s national chairman position which was contested for by Dr. Mohammed Sheriff Esq and Atty Lafayette Gould.
Mounting the pondium earlier, Atty Gould emphasized his long-term commitment and experience in Liberian politics, including chairing two other political parties, one of which led the country.
Gould emphasized lessons learned from past mistakes especially in 2023 vowed to strengthen the party’s membership base and maintain close ties with partners, including those in the diaspora, to position the ANC for success in the 2029 elections.
He said, “No better person can work with all partners to continue our mission than those of us who have been in the trenches.”
Gould threw a sudden jab at Dr. Sheriff’s hairstyle, saying, “Look at me very well, that’s why I didn’t wear no hat, nothing, I want you to see me and hold me responsible if you give me the party. I will show you my head clean all the way down so you will mark me by that.”
He appeared confident that his experience makes him the best candidate to lead the party forward.
The program had in attendance Mr. Cummings and nearly the entire leadership of the ANC both from Liberia and abroad, the Unity Party Chairman, Rev Luther Tarpeh, former associate justice, Cllr K’arbena Mohammed Jane’h, former representative, Jeh Byron Brown of Bassa, a representation of the National Elections Commission or NEC, Nimba County Lawmaker, Tarr Wongbeh, Margibi Chairman of the Citizens Movement for Change or CMC, Roland Teah and the Kakaka City Mayor, Rev Gbarngawoe Eddie Seboe amongst others.
Dr. Mohammed Sheriff Esq stated, “Today, you have a choice, a choice to either go forward or a choice to go backwards. The choice we made many years ago from 7%, we came down to 1%, as a political advisor to the political leader, he made bad decision. This colleague of mine is getting tired and when he is getting tired, we don’t retire him, bad things will happen.”
His statement which is indicative of the fact that Mr. Cummings himself has been feeding on wrong pieces of advice setting the basis of his decisions that undermined the ANC’s progress came as a shock to the political leader immediately changing the bright countenance of his face.
While also reacting to Atty Gould, Dr Sheriff added, “My opponent said, he has a lot of experience. Yes, it’s true but the experience is so bad and that’s why George Weah had to ask him out and that’s why we brought ANC.”
According to him, if experience is the only thing that is considered for leadership, the ANC must allow the Unity Party (UP) and Congress for Democratic Change or CDC to continue ruling the country.
Describing himself as a PhD holder in law and a representation of the young people, he maintained, “That man DJ Gould, he’s my friend. He has been a DJ. He had curly hair, burst his ears, that man in Philadelphia, Penn State. I know him!”
He admonished the party to desist from doing the same thing if it is expecting a different result. He noted that he is culturally connected, understands Liberia and engaged with the young people, making him to be best suited for the ANC National Chairman Position.
