Concerns are being raised about the stance of the Bishop of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Liberia, Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr, on the issue of same-sex marriage in the church.
The Bishop who was known for his strong position against homosexuality in the church dating as far back as 2021, appears to be caught between the scissors.
The Bishop’s Purported Position Against Same-sex Marriage In The Methodist Church In Liberia
On one hand, he says the United Methodist Church in Liberia is committed to upholding biblical principles as enshrined in the UMC’s Book of Discipline. He is on record for saying the United Methodist Church in Liberia is not and will never be a church that encourages same-sex marriage.
Bishop Quire is also noted for urging pastors and members of the Methodist Church to remain steadfast in their faith in working for God as he further gave them his words that the church will always adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
In 2021, during the Weala District Conference’s Annual Conference, he frowned at the idea and indicated to the congregation that God will punish those who are involved with same-sex.
The Bishop’s Sudden Twisted And Complicated Position On The Same-sex Marriage
On the other hand, and after creating the impression that he does not agree with same-sex marriage or the practice of homosexuality in the Methodist Setting, he is now finding it very difficult to convince the UMC Churches and their members in Liberia not to break away their congregations from the denomination globally but allow people in other regions who want same-sex marriage practice it.
While he claims not to be in line with any thing about homosexuality in the Methodist Church in Liberia, he at the same time wants the UMC in Liberia to allow others have their will and stay be a part of the church. In 2024, he was attacked in Nimba County and narrowly escaped under huge security protection while trying to explain why the church should remain together and how the issue of same-sex should be handled.

The members got infuriated by his statement and bursted into attacking him, chanting slogans against his advocacy. Following that incident, a lot of the members have started distancing themselves from the United Methodist Churches in Liberia.
His move considered by many in the country as a sudden ‘U-turn’ comes amidst the 2022 General Conference in the United States where same-sex marriage was paramount on the agenda. This issue has prompted significant controversy leading to diverse opinions amongt Methodist and other denominations and the larger Christian Community.
He has also warned against any break away by Methodist Churches, adding that the United Methodist Church is not a congregational church so churches bearing the UMC’s Emblem have no such right to break away.
He says churches under the UMC that are issuing position statements of break away are doing so due to misinformation and disinformation related to same-sex marriage in the church.
Bishop Quire is on record for further stating that no local UMC Congregation knowingly and unknowingly can break away without consequences.
Meanwhile, some UMC Members, speaking on anonymity, expressing their frustration in the Bishop’s current stance which they see as being complicated say they rather leave the church to staying and being a part of a denomination that is asking them to resist same-sex marriage in the UMC in Liberia but at the same time expects them to remain in the same church background with homosexuals.
One of them wondered: “Where does the Bishop stand on this issue of same-sex in the church?”
Our News Bureau is following up information about a huge faction of the UMC’s in Liberia plan to break away any time soon to avoid further embarrassment.
In the midst of all this, the million dollars question is being asked about the bishop’s realistic stance. Where Truly Does The United Methodist Church (UMC) Bishop In Liberia Stand On Same-sex Marriage Or The Practice Of Homosexuality In The Church?
