Following his second State Of The Nation Address (SONA) on January 27, 2025 as required by Article fifty-eight (58) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, in which President Joseph Nyumah Boakai boasted about his government’s stance against corruption, the Executive Director of the National Youth Movement For Transparent Elections or NAYMOTE strongly has slammed the president and said he is undermining the fight against corruption.
In his report, the president said he remains committed to promoting openness, transparency and accountability in his government, something according to him that has led him to supporting the independence of integrity institutions including the General Auditing Commission of Liberia or GAC.
He added that the GAC has published sixty (60) out of eighty (80) audits, inclusive of the ones conducted before his ascendency. He also reported that the Independent Auditing Agency has embedded internal auditors in about ninety-one (91) of one hundred and thirty-one (131) spending entities to ensure accountability for public funds.
He also outlined other actions his government has taken to address the issues of accountability and transparency, in other words the fight against corruption in his government but NAYMOTE Executive Director, Eddie D Jarwolo stated that the president’s behavior makes the battle against corruption more difficult, urging him further to walk the talk of corruption fight.
Mr. Jarwolo wrote on his official Facebook page a few hours after President’s Boakai’s State Of Nation Address: “Mr. President, the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) are among the 60 out of 80 audits whose results have been released by the General Auditing Commission (GAC), but no action has been taken by your government. Your behavior makes the battle against corruption more difficult. Walk the talk.”
The National Youth Movement for Transparent Elections or NAYMOTE is a leading Liberian grassroots organization promoting democracy, peacebuilding, human rights and civic engagement.
