The former District Superintendent of the Weala District of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Liberia who is also the current President of the College of West Africa (CWA), Rev Paye Cooper Mondolo has described as evil and devilish the issue of regionalization in the United Methodist Church.
He spoke to reporters in Kakaka on Feb 10, 2025 while in route to Gbarnga for the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Rev Mondolo who was also suspended from his position as president of the College of West Africa recently following his resistance to the ‘Regionalization Plan’ stated: “Regionalization is satanic, it’s evil, it’s devilish because our conference had been regionalized alread. Those who are in the United States worship according to those in the United States. When we are in Africa, we worship according to our context. Why should we regionalize now? We have one Bible and we’re going to have one book of discipline, which we have now so you cannot allow us to say well, let’s legalize sin.”
He told reporters that he has made his position known that he rejects same-sex marriage and regionalization in the church because he does not support the process that legalizes sin.

He wonders what will they tell their members in the church if they legalize Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) in the church. Describing the legalization of LGBTQ as being wrong, mainly in the church, he suggests that the church seriously considers coming together and discussing the issue to have one understanding which will find a better settlement.
“If we come together and discuss the issue, it will be settled, but if we cannot discuss the issue, it will not work,” he mentioned.
Rev Mondolo whose church disagreed with the United Methodist Church (UMC) Bishop, Samuel Jerome Quire’s acceptance of the ‘Regionalization Plan’ and broke away from the United Methodist Church says he is going to the annual conference with the mindset of having a discussion on the issue but he is not being allowed to register for the conference.
He noted that if he is not given the chance to participate in the annual conference, he will decide the next plan of action. Describing himself as a United Methodist, he said he believes that his suspension is illegal, for which he is going to attend the conference.
In response to his reported plan of organizing the breakaway churches of the UMC to become their new bishop, he said becoming a bishop is a process and that the people have only disassociated themselves from the church because of their disagreements with the regionalization.
According to him, if the concerns of the people are left unaddressed, they will align themselves with the new denomination which is the Global Methodist Church which the Bishop Quire himself had supported earlier.
He narrated that if the need arises, those involved will come together, have one understanding and choose who becomes their bishop.
