In the midst of recent fire incidents at the Salala Rubber Corporation or SRC Plantation in Margibi County District Number #: 5, the Liberia National Police has begun training hundreds of community watch forum members to aid in protecting the company.
The SRC is now the property of Mr. Jetty, an Indian Businessman in Liberia who has lived in the country as of the age of 25 years.
The Margibi County Assistant Commissioner of Police or ACP Patrick B Kormazu made the disclosure while in an interview with journalists in Kakaka at the administrative building recently where he was also conducting training for some members of the Kakaka City Police.
He said the training is carried on with the approval of the national chair of the Community Watch Forum Team of Liberia.
He also stated: “You know of recent, there has been growing concern, there’s a company within district #: 5, the Jetty’s Company and there has been growing concern of continuous deliberate fire incidences in that area so as to maybe curtail or minimize such incidents, we thought to get the community involved with community policing.”
According to him, it is good to get the residents of the area involved and talk to them about the importance of the company.
Recently, the two fire situations at the SRC which led to some damages have raised a serious concern in the area. Though Mr. Jetty has government’s assigned security and private security personnel at his Jetty Rubber LLC and SRC, the SRC Plantation still appears to be vulnerable especially under Mr. Jetty.
Mr. Jetty bought the SRC last year from Socfin Group and has been running all the affairs of the company but with some level of difficulty. There were issues confronting the companies then that the past management did not handle well, leading to serious attacks which resulted to properties of the company being destroyed by tappers of the company.
Following that, the owners shutdown for a while and sold the company to Mr. Jetty who had earlier been engaged with them prior to the violent attack at the main factory in Weala, Margibi County in 2024.
Mr. Jetty took over and gave assurances of doing everything to improved the living standard of the workers. It appeared as a new beginning to many of the workers who jubilantly welcomed Mr Jetty.
At the moment, if Mr Jetty is actually working in line with the people as per their expectations, this is one thing that remains a big question.
One of the residents from one of the villages around SRC Plantation who spoke on anonymity said Mr. Jetty thinks that he is highly connected to the government so he does not regard the people on the ground but comes in the public to pretend to be a very good man.
The person also said he has also created a lot of fear in the area by sending to jail every person who criticizes him and the company.
How be it, Mr Jetty is reported to be doing some improvements on the housing facilities of the plantation at the moment.
Henceforth; it is advisable that Mr. Jetty uses good relationship with the workforce and residents in the areas of his companies to protect the investments as the individuals involved with carrying on destruction are warned to stop creating set back to job opportunities.
