After a prolonged period of promises by the past and current Governments of Liberia through the Margibi County Administrations about the pavement of roads in Kakaka, Margibi County, the pavement has now commenced, the county development officer, B Lewis N Kaine told reporters over the weekend.
He said the project commences April 21, 2025. He made the disclosure in the office of the Kakaka City Mayor, Rev Gbarngawoe Eddie Seboe following a stakeholders’ engagement with community leaders of Kakaka City.
He stated that a total of 8.7 kilometers of road will be done naming specific roads to be touched as the road leading from the Kakaka Police Station to the burnt C. H. Rennie Hospital, further coming back to the main streets but passing through the 14th Road and stopping to the Methodist Church opposite the New Creation Business Center.
The VIP Road that goes through Kissi and Gbandi Communities and extends to the main Bong Mines Road is another point. The Kakaka Back Road and the Old 14th Road amongst others were named by the county development officer in the category of roads being targeted when he was asked.
Like he did with the other roads, he was not specific about many other roads in the city with bad conditions including the road leading from the first and second junctions of the World Bank Community connecting to the Bong Mines Road.
The road leading straight into Francis Lewis Farm which connects Kakaka Health Center and the Lango Lappaye Senior High Section Project now in progress. Lango Lippaye is the biggest government senior high school in Kakaka.
The road that starts around the Barcolleh Health Center right opposite the St. Christopher Catholic High School, connecting the Kakaka general market, the Nancy B Doe Sports Pitch, the Bassa Community, the Kakaka Rural Teacher Training Institute (KRTTI), Booker Washington Institute (BWI), Lango Lappaye High School and the Du Village area.
The road from the Sirleaf Estate Junction into Wenneh Town Community and other areas, the road from the Borlorla Junction opposite the City View Guest House and many other roads were not specifically spoken about like in the case of the ones listed by Mr. B Lewis N Kaine.
He was asked to name the main roads that are being targeted when he particularly pointed out certain roads in Kakaka.
He averred that the contract was given to the PGL Construction Company which sub contracted the East Construction Company and it is expected to take two years to complete the project.
He clarified that there will be no compensation for those who already violated by occupying the main roads when they know they are not supposed to be there, putting the size of the road at 13 meters.
According to him, the meeting with the folks was about involving the people of Margibi, especially Kakaka with the development regarding the road works that have begun.
Mr. Kaine who could not tell reporters how much the project costs and if a blue print of the project is available to the county administration for onwards sharing with Margibians, explained that the blue print was still being looked at.
As the county development officer of Margibi, he promised to ensure that the blue print and cost of the project be concluded with and further disclosed to the public before April 21, 2025 but if this actually happened, this medium is yet to know.
Henceforth, the Chinese and other foreign nationals awarded the contract started doing the rehabilitation of the road leading to the Kakaka City Administrative Building during the morning hours of April 21, 2025.
He explained that there have been cries from many of the citizens calling for the pavement of the road to an extent where some of the citizens also staged protest actions saying that they want to see a pavement of Kakaka City Streets.
It can be recalled that an advocacy group in Kakaka under the banner, Citzens United For Sustainable Development recently carried on protest actions demanding that the county administration pave the roads due to their deployable nature hindering the free movement of people in the city. The roads are seriously challenged with dust when there is a sunshine and mud when the rain falls.
He noted that this government considers the road works in Kakaka as a priority issue so they initially reviewed the plan by the previous administration which promised to have done the road but it did not do it.
The George Weah Administration through the past county administration headed by Jerry O Varnie as superintendent of Margibi made a lot of promises during their six years period of leadership about fixing the road but to no avail. There was one point in time where Mr. Weah himself broke ground and pledged his commitment in doing the roads but all went in thin air.
Even the then presidential aid to Former President Weah, Sekou Kalasco, being a resident of Margibi gave assurances many times about the road and the C. H. Rennie Hospital rebuilding projects but nothing yielded result.
A lot of Margibians had said they voted against Mr. Weah because he and his officials lied about the two key projects during his tenure.
This current leadership according to sources within the county administration disclosed that the road works were about to start before now but did come to fruition as well.
There was a point in time in March of 2025 where an official of the county in an open conversation with some media personnel said the project was starting in March.
Further speaking to journalists over the weekend, Mr. Kaine narrated that the county administration needs the support and cooperation of Margibians and most seriously for them to be a part of the process adding that the development is for the people so he does not want it to come to them as a surprise where they will wake up one morning and just see yellow machines working and breaking down kitchens on the road side.
He added that the processes leading to the road pavement started a long time ago when the mapping was done, structures marked and awareness created so a lot of the people are already informed and prepared for the pavement.
He maintained that there is currently a revision of some of the texture designs of the roads and that the past administration decided to do alpha pavement but they are doing rigid or concrete pavement.
He said some of the things have been finalized but they must be printed into blue print and submitted to them which have not been done.
He spoke that the final design would have been shared with them before the contract starts to enable them to inform Margibians about the cost and the blue print of the Kakata City Roads pavement project.
