The ruling Unity Party or UP has assured opposition political parties and politicians of political tolerance, protection of the rights and respect for their views against the government, and happenings in the country.
Describing the past as dark days, when oppositions according to the UP were oppressed, the party also says the dark days when opposed views were oppressed are over in country.
The national chairman of the party, Rev Luther Tarpeh, while making a special remark at the Alternative National Congress or ANC 4th National Convention at the Kakaka Administrative Building over the weekend (Saturday October 4, 2025) where he was invited as a special guest explained that his presence at the convention demonstrated a clear testimony of the Unity Party’s deep seated values that the democratic tenants and values of Liberia must thrive in post-war Liberia.
Rev Luther Tarpeh, Unity Party Chairman stated, “Our nation in time past, could not withstand or entertain opposing or critical voices against a sitting government. Opposition leaders were compared and were intimidated, chased out of the country and we’re deprived of their right to have a say in the forward match of the country! Those dark days of oppressing opposed views are over.”
In his assurance, he also pledged the Unity Party led administration’s commitment to never intimidating any opposition party but recognizing their voices on issues regarding the country.
According to him, in this dispensation all Liberians must work vigorously to convince the world that Liberia and Liberians are determined to promote political harmony and tolerance.
He maintained that despite the names of their political institutions, the different colors of their respective party flags and vision of how they think the country should move forward, they should all not forget that they are Liberians.
The UP Chairman added that thinking and planning how to make Liberia better by political actors is a common denominator that must be the key guiding principle of the country’s national body politics.
“Political oppositions should not, let me say that again, political oppositions should not be misconstrued as political enmity,” he noted.
While expressing the UP’s best wishes for the ANC’s convention, he underscored the need for political parties to remain civil with engagements and steadfast about development.
He told the opposition community that wishing a sitting government to fail is unpatriotic, reminding them that only political institutions are clog and protected in the democratic dispensation to provide governance.
“Under the Joseph Nyumah Boakai Administration, the rights of all political parties will be respected,” Rev Tarpeh averred.
