Funded about 69 years ago in 1956, the cup or championship of the National County’s Sports Meet in Liberia has been won and continue to be won by several of the 15 counties of Liberia which have consistently being featured as the only teams during the tournament.
River Gee is the defending champ of this year’s edition of the county’s sports meet after winning the 2023/2024’s edition, Maryland stands as the first county to win in 1956 while Nimba is the most successful county which has won the cup six different times. The years Nimba took the championship include 1978, 1979, 2010, 2011, 2022 and 2023.
Next to Nimba is Grand Kru County which won during the years 1974, 1977,1985, 1987 and 2020, Grand Bassa took it in 1990, 2014 and 2016. Bomi, Montserrado and Grand Cape Mount Counties have each won the meet twice in different years, Bomi (2009, 2019), Montserrado (2017, 2018) and Grand Cape Mount (1969, 2013).
Grand Gedeh clinched the cup in 1989, Gbarpolu, 2004, River Cess, 2007, Bong, 2008, Margibi, 2012 and Lofa, 2021.
Organized by the Ministries of Youth and Sports and Internal Affairs for the purpose of reconciling and uniting Liberians, the rationale is also to figure out young talented Liberian Soccer Players.
The game is considered by many Liberians as a political, traditional and financial sporting competition.
The next games of this year’s tournament are set for Wednesday January 15, 2025 in the various host counties of Bong, Cape Mount, Grand Gedeh and Sinoe. More updates to follow as the meet goes on.
