A US-based group identified as Diaspora Alert is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Liberia’s First Lady, Katumu Boakai, for her active involvement in duping Liberian students who were seeking foreign scholarships.
The group in a press statement under the signature of its chairman, Eric Pervist indicates that these allegations have raised concerns about the potential misuse of power and trust.
It recounted that Varfee Holmes, a senior official in the First Lady’s office, implicated Madam Boakai in a grand scam that duped Liberian students of thousands of United States dollars under false pretenses, promising scholarship opportunities in London that were never delivered.
According to the group, Holmes has a criminal history, having been indicted in the General Auditing Commission 2008 Census Report for stealing census funds, and the fact that the First Lady knowingly recruited him speaks volumes.
Additionally, the release mentioned that this isn’t the first time Madam Boakai has been linked to criminal activities, as she was previously accused in December 2024 of stealing money intended for Christmas gifts for slum children in Monrovia.
DA believes it is crucial to protect the rights and interests of Liberian students who have been affected by this scam. The group is therefore urging the relevant authorities to launch a comprehensive investigation into these allegations, ensuring that all parties involved are held accountable for their action
