In the midst of a seriously creeping division now gradually tearing apart the United Methodist Church or UMC in Liberia owing to the misunderstanding of the interpretation of the word ‘Regionalization’, the Bishop of the Liberia Area of the UMC, Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr is admonishing the members of the church not to walk away from God or Break away from the church.
The Bishop’s urge also comes in the wake of information that the Weala District Conference of the United Methodist Church in Liberia is at the verge of breaking away form the church due to the decision of United Methodist Church Worldwide to agree to ‘Regionalization’ in the church.
The Weala District Conference is headed by the Rev Jacob Methuselah Sackie and it covers about five (5) counties inclusive of Margibi, Bong, Bassa, Montserrado and Gbarpolu with forty-one (41) churches.
Throngtalk News Bureau has also gathered that the Weala District Conference is very angry with their Bishop for his decision to endorse the ‘Regionalization Plan’ in the church, a decision made in the United States of America.
The Weala District Conference’s understanding of the ‘Regionalization Plan’ is same-sex marriage, gay marriage or the practice of homosexuality in the church.
The conference says the bishop’s action contravenes the Biblical teaching of the church.
United Methodist Bishop, Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr

But delivering his sermon during the closure of the 27th Annual Conference of the Weala District Conference under the United Methodist Church, held in Bong Mines, Bong County, which lasted from January 13 to the 19, 2025, Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire Jr seriously warned the members of the church that walking away from God or breaking away as he is hearing from unconfirmed sources about them is a bad idea.
He spoke on the theme: “Do not walk away from God.”
He said in the midst of the storm, confusion or when people have broken hearts, it is not a good decision to walk away from God.
Further speaking to reporters after his involvement into the district conference in Bong Mines, he said their text which was taken from the book of 1 Corinthians, talking about the three Hebrew Boys who challenged the king and refused to serve his golden image, the boys did not walk away from their faith in God.
He said regionalization is not about same-sex marriage but it is about customizing the ministry based on their contexts in regions.
While citing a case study, he said if a person wants a customized vehicle, he or she could send to the factory to have it being made in a special way according to how he or she wants it to be.
He added that there is nothing in the definition of regionalization that talks about same-sex or gay marriage as it is being insinuated by some people who are tarnishing the reputation of the United Methodist Church.
According to him, in the various regions, people will be given the chance to practice their faith in line with their culture, noting that the UMC in Liberia will never be a part of anything that has to with same-sex marriage.
Throngtalk News Bureau will bring the detail of the immediate reply from the Weala District Conference to Bishop Quire’s warning.
