A young Margibian, Joseph Olando Beyan, also the former National Youth Chairman of the People’s Unification Party or PUP is seriously urging Leaders and Stakeholders of the Methodist Churches to empower their members as part of strategies to alleviate poverty amongst them.
Mr Beyan wants the church to organize skill training programs that will teach the members how make money and support the church. He recommends that there be a department called the trade department.
He made the statement on Sunday January 26, 2025 at the closure of the 28th conference of the Weala District under the Concern United Methodist Church in Liberia.
His call comes amidst a clarion call made by the church recently seeking support to build a junior high school project that costs one hundred and fifty thousand United States Dollars (US$150,000) at their headquarters in the James Dennis Farm Community of Weala in Margibi District #: 5.
When he made a remark at which time he also represented the Kakaka City Manager, Kpelleh boy Blackie, pledging fifty (50) bags of cement on their behalf to be picked up at the end of February 2025, he said: “There is a need for you to open a department called trade department. Empower our women and young people so that they can be sustainable. The poverty is too much in the church.”
He said if the church members were empowered, they would have helped to build the school project without calling for assistance. He also said if the church is involved with programs of sustainability, people will not go to them talking about gay marriage or same-sex marriage in the church.
He says when one enters the church, that person can see the poverty on the faces of the members which is bad.
He added that because those championing same-sex activities believe that the church does not have money in Liberia, they tend to stop Africans from living according to their cultures and traditions but at the same time want homosexuality to be accepted by the same Africans.
In response, the District Superintendent of the Weala District Conference of the Concern United Methodist Church, Rev Augustine S K Dakepine told Joseph Olando Beyan that his recommendation are just in line with the program of the church under the current dispensation.
According to the Rev Dakepine, developing the human resource and infrastructure under his leadership is a key priority for the church evidenced by the current school building project.
