Margibi County Superintendent, Atty Victoria Wolobah Duncan says her administration took over nearly an empty account from former Superintendent Jerry O Vaarnie, making her operations very difficult.
She explained that though her predecessor reported in his turn over note that L$500,000 and US$500 was in the account of the county, the county finance officer upon receiving the bank statement told her that the account was zero balance.
She made the statement on Tuesday April 15, 2025 at her office when she addressed a wide range of issues about Margibi and Liberia in general.
“I have said this over and over, since my ascendency in this position that we met almost an empty account in Margibi County. Unlike other counties, we met 500,000 Liberian Dollars in the Liberian Dollars account. It was stated that 500 US Dollars is in the account but the county finance officer, upon statement from the bank according to her, we have to revisit that and see what it is but she said that the account had a zero balance.”
Superintendent Duncan however promised to ensure that the account is completely verified because in the turn over note, her predecessor, Jerry Varnie said L$500,000 and US$500 was left in the account of Margibi.
According to her, it has been very challenging for her office and the county’s administration to operate due to the situation but they have been making all the efforts to do the job of the people.
In spite of the situation, she added that there are money from the county and social development funds available to them which they will very soon start to implement some of the unfinished projects with.
She disclosed that she has written the General Auditing Commission of Liberia, GAC requesting an audit which will center on finance and assets because the incumbent leadership needs to know how much properties and finance the county has.
Madam Duncan narrated that the GAC started the audit of the past administration from 2020 and will last up to 2025 so when the auditors reach to Margibi, people responsible will be called in for questioning.
In another development, she informed reporters that the county is working on relocating the offices of county officials to a new home in the Gbofela Community. Describing the building as the Margibi County Administrative Complex, she stated that it is a beautiful building in which the county invested over US$2,000,000 into.
The building is presently being used by the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency or LDEA in Margibi. She maintained that the building just need some renovation works as it has around 30 rooms that can host offices of the county officials from various sectors of the county.
