What appears very surprising to many Liberians and specifically looks like a day dream to some Unity Partisans and supporters of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai occurred on the night January 30, 2025 when a break away supporter of Boakai’s Presidency, Henry P Costa and the president settled their dispute. They took nearly two hours having discussion characterized by sharing of stories and laughter with his uncle’s trademark humor shining through, he added.
They both, before their split, affectionately referred to each other as uncle and nephew while Costa was seen gathering support and making frantic efforts for Boakai’s ascendency to the presidency.
During the morning hours of January 31, 2025, Mr. Costa posted on his official Facebook page some memorable pictures of him and the president smiling, as he reduced his height very closed to the president in posting for the photos.
He wrote: “Last night was a truly unforgettable reunion with my uncle, President Joseph N Boakai. Our reconciliation meeting which lasted almost 2 hours, was a heartfelt and solemn experience that I will cherish forever.”
He said at one point in time, Boakai equipped: “When the prodigal son returns home, it is the cow that suffers because it is slaughtered for the feast.”
He mentioned that the president’s words held a deeper truth about the sacrifices made for the sake of love and family. According to Costa, the reunion would not have been possible without tireless efforts of some very special people that he did not mention, extending his deepest gratitude.
He stated: “Your love, support, and perseverance have brought healing and restoration to a once cherished relationship.”
Costa says he is reminded that forgiveness, understanding, and love can conquer even the widest of divides. He expressed his gratitude for the second chance given him by Boakai for reconnection and strengthening of their bond.
At certain point in time in 2023, during the heated part of the political processes in Liberia, Nephew Henry Pedro Costa broke up political tie with his Uncle Joseph Nyumah Boakai due to dissatisfaction.
He gave support to former President George M Weah, explaining about Uncle Joe’s betrayal against him despite all the efforts he claimed to have made in rebranding his (Boakai’s) political journey. All this actually got at its peak in 2023 during the elections when supporters of Boakai attacked Costa while he made disclosures unexpected of Boakai.
After the elections, Costa have been quiet and reportedly engaged with some folks around Boakai for the reconciliation.
Some Liberians have expected Costa to be a top critic of Boakai’s regime, many believed the two could not get back on path and others anticipated this reconciliation considering the relationship between Costa and the president as well as his efforts applied in Boakai’s personal and political life.
